Pet Urine Odor Removal

People often love their home pets dearly…but not so much the odors they may leave behind in your house. Animal lovers also know that the smell of cat or dog urine is only a part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that the pet tends to relieve itself in the same place again.

By treating fresh urine promptly, removing old odors and preventing bathroom accidents in the first place, you can eliminate pet odors and make your home smell fresh again.

Once you find a fresh urine stain, blot the spot with a clean towel immediately. This will soak up as much urine as possible, reducing the possibility of the pee soaking into your rug or upholstery. Use a bowl of warm water and a few drops of mild soap to dilute the damp spot. Use a clean towel to wipe the wet spot with the soapy water, blotting with a dry towel. You may have to do this a few times until no traces of the original stain remain.

Launder or replace any items like sheets or covers that retain smell.

Home remedies

Vinegar is a very effective odor neutralizer. Put white vinegar in a spray bottle and use it to saturate the offending area. Leave it in place for a few hours, until it dries. As the vinegar smell fades, so will the odor of urine.

Using corn starch or baking soda can also neutralize strong odors and is harmless to you and your pet. Sprinkle it over the smelly area, and work it in well with a broom or a scrub brush so that it gets to the odor’s source. Let it sit for about 24 hours. The corn starch or baking soda will come up, bringing the urine odor along with it. Then vacuum the area thoroughly to remove the residue.

Chlorine bleach effectively removes pet urine odors from concrete surfaces like patios or in garages. Bleach, however, has to be used with care as it can damage your clothing, carpets, and furniture; neither you nor your pet should breathe the fumes. Put some bleach in a spray bottle and apply it full-strength to the affected area. Leave it for an hour or two, then rinse well.

Over the counter products

You can also use enzyme-based products available at pet stores that break down the bacteria and neutralizes the odor. These products use the power of enzymes to do the work and are non-toxic for pets. These enzymes are proteins that help to get rid of natural chemical reactions at a molecular level. The enzymes in pet carpet care products attach themselves to the molecules that make up the urine and bacteria that feed on it. You may need to treat the area with a product more than once.
